This little Shih Tzu is nothing like what their name means ‘little lion’. They are a lover and not a fighter! The beautiful Shih Tzu is an affectionate, happy and in love little dog that will follow you around a room to room. They enjoy their owner’s company and are openly seeking for companionship and love.
SHIH TZU’S GENETICS ARE CLOSE TO WOLVES!
Shih Tzu is one of the most ancient breeds, genetics say they are close to wolves. They are one of the oldest breeds dating back to 8,000 B.C. Through research, it was found that Shiz Tzu’s genetics were closely related to wolves genes – how amazing that this small breed dog has developed from a large breed wild animal.
DID YOU SAY FOOT WARMERS?
Shih Tzu were foot warms, hand warmers, lap warmers and bed companions for Emperors. This breed is very well known for his dominant behavior and your lap is his domain. He is the happiest when he is with his family but mind you this breed is no couch potato! He is lively and he will greet any new comers with a loving and friendly manner.
By 1930 – there was only 14 Shih Tzus in the world! After the Communist in China, there were as few as 14 Shih Tzus left in the world, most of them having been smuggled out in the 1930s. An effort to re-establish Shih Tzus was undertaken in the West, and the breed was saved
BORN WITHOUT DOUBLE COATS
The Shih Tzu has a thick double coat that consists of a harder outer coat and soft inner coat. Puppies are born with a single coat and their adult coat begins to grow after about 7 months.
WITHIN DAYS THEIR FUR WILL MAT
Daily brushing is ideal, but coats that go more than a few days without grooming begin to mat. Daily brushing and combing are necessary to prevent tangles, as is frequent bathing with a long hair shampoo (as often as once a week). When brushing, you want to make sure that you brush all the way down to the skin. One technique is to place your dog on his side while you brush the coat in sections; it’s easier to brush that way and more comfortable for the dog. At about 10 to 12 months of age, the Shih Tzu coat changes from puppy fluff to a silky adult coat.

Shih Tzu’s are happy, loving and friendly dogs that just want to be close to you. They have some demanding grooming needs, but there is nothing that can’t be fixed with a dose of shampoo and a daily brush spritz to remedy their tangles and matting.
