7 Surprising Facts About Corgis Dog Breed

The Welsh Corgi has two Corgi breeds, Cardigans and Pembroke’s. Corgis are believed to have existed in Wales for more than 3,000 years. The Cardigan is distinguished by his long tail — like the sleeves of a cardigan sweater — and was used to drive cattle to market. Corgis are sensible and affectionate, they love to spend time with family and are active, fun-loving playmate for school-age children. Corgis have medium-length coat comes in many colors and patterns, including red, brindle, blue merle and black, usually with white markings.

Ancestry with Huskies

You’d never guess by looking at them, but these squat dogs share a common ancestry with the formidable Siberian husky. They have less in common with dogs their size and more in common with their larger canine brethren. Pembroke Welsh corgi are likely born without a tail. After centuries of tail docking, the breed has evolved to be nearly tailless!

Corgis Have a Double Coat

These dogs know how to winterize and accessorize. Two breeds, two coats: cardigans and Pembrokes have a double coat of hair, enabling them have weather protection but also lose a layer in the warmer seasons. The softer undercoat sheds twice a year in a fall and spring blowout. It is very important to use a nourishing shampoo to cleanse and hydrate your corgis coat – a daily leave on spray will assist to reduce the shedding and remove any excess fur.

Colorful Corgis

Most people think of one or two color schemes when it comes to a corgi, but the Pembroke and cardigan actually vary quite a bit. Colors include sable, merle, tri-colored, red, black, brindle, and fawn with white markings. Be sure to use a shampoo to keep your corgis coat glowing!

Corgis are low maintenance
