A very popular question that is asked – can I use my Human Shampoo to wash my dog?
For some, it may be easier or simpler to use human shampoo or conditioner instead of especially dog product made to bath your dog.
Frequent use of human shampoo may be more irritating and harmful as the ingredients, extracts and pH level is not balanced for your dog’s skin and coat condition. It is important to understand why you should always use a Dog Shampoo instead.
There are 2 major reasons to avoid using human shampoo on your dog:
- Skin pH levels
Humans have more of an acidic skin type with a pH of 5.5 up to 6.5, as this is needed to best hygienically cleanse our scalp and skin. Dogs have more of an alkaline skin type with a pH of 7.0 up to 7.5, which is why using a dog shampoo with using such acidic human shampoo on them could break down their skin mantle and make them exposed to germs and fleas.
- Sensitive skin
Dogs are usually much more delicate than humans as their skin only has between 3-5 layers, in comparison to humans with 10-15 layers. As such, our skin can take more of a battering from harsh products and chemicals while your pet will be more easily irritated. Such irritation leads to dehydration, itching, and scratches.
Whenever you are shopping for a shampoo for your dog’s products, make sure you find something that is pH balanced and mild enough for your dog whether they are sensitive or not.
